Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has strongly endorsed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, urging Ghanaians to vote for him in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. In a video message played during the launch of the NPP's 2024 manifesto in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Kufuor emphasized that Dr. Bawumia is the right person to lead Ghana at this critical moment.
“We are entreating the nation to give Bawumia a chance. I see him as a man of destiny, particularly for the moment we are in now. I believe he is the man of the moment,” Kufuor stated in his endorsement.
This marks the second time that Kufuor has described the Vice President in such glowing terms since Dr. Bawumia became the NPP's flagbearer after winning the party's internal elections on November 4, 2023. Earlier, during a speech at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday, February 7, Kufuor reminisced about his first encounter with Bawumia in 2002 when he was a research assistant at the Bank of Ghana. Kufuor recalled being impressed by Bawumia's presentation at an international conference in London, which led him to believe that Bawumia was destined for greatness.
“I have always seen him as a man of destiny. When I first saw him in 2002, he was a research assistant at the Bank of Ghana. This young man delivered a paper at an international conference of giants in London. Immediately after his address, I told him he is a man of destiny,” Kufuor recounted.
Kufuor's endorsement was echoed by the National Chairman of the NPP, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, who also praised Dr. Bawumia for his hard work and determination. Ntim noted that Bawumia's election as the party's flagbearer demonstrates the NPP's commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
“The election of Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer shows that we are not an exclusivist party but one that values diversity and embraces different perspectives. I commend Dr. Bawumia for his exceptional determination and hard work, which has earned him the well-deserved position of NPP presidential candidate for 2024,” Ntim stated.
As the 2024 elections approach, Kufuor's endorsement is seen as a significant boost for Dr. Bawumia's campaign, further solidifying his position as the NPP's preferred candidate to lead Ghana.
