NPP Greater Accra Chairman Faces Criticism Over Personal Dispute with McDan

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Divine Agorhom, is under fire from within his party for allegedly prioritizing a personal vendetta over critical campaign activities. According to a report by NewsGhana.com, Agorhom's focus has shifted towards a dispute with Dr. Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, and his company, Electrochem Ghana Limited, instead of advancing the party's political agenda.

The controversy revolves around Electrochem Ghana Limited's lease to mine salt at the Songor Lagoon, a decision that has ignited opposition from some local communities and interest groups. These groups express concerns over the potential impact of the salt mining project on their livelihoods. The lagoon, which has traditionally been a source of livelihood for local communities through small-scale salt mining and fishing, now faces the possibility of being dominated by a large-scale operation.

Despite the objections, the salt mining project has been lauded for its potential economic benefits. The company claims to have created over 3,000 jobs, many of which are held by women from the surrounding communities. The employment opportunities provided by the project have been highlighted as a significant advantage, offering stable income to families in the area.

Moreover, a Parliamentary Select Committee has weighed in on the matter, recommending that portions of the concession be allocated to local communities to mine salt responsibly. This initiative, according to reports, has already been implemented by Electrochem Ghana Limited, with local communities being allowed to participate in the salt mining process within certain designated areas.

However, Divine Agorhom's apparent focus on his personal feud with McDan has drawn criticism from members of the NPP, who argue that his actions are detracting from the party's broader objectives. As the NPP gears up for upcoming elections, concerns are growing that this internal discord could weaken the party's efforts in the Greater Accra Region, a crucial battleground in Ghanaian politics.

The situation underscores the tension between economic development and local interests, as well as the political dynamics within the NPP, as it navigates the complex landscape ahead of the next elections.
