Former Member of Parliament Atta Akyea has launched a blistering attack on a national security investigation, calling it a sham built on misunderstanding and incompetence.
What He Said
Akyea did not hold back. He described the investigation as a "fishing expedition" carried out by people who simply do not understand national security. His core argument? The investigators tried to interpret a national security account without ever speaking to the person who actually owns and manages that account.
"What kind of investigation would that be?" he asked.
The Key Problem
Akyea broke down the technical failure in simple terms. The investigators, he said, confused an "account identifier" with the actual "account owner." In this case, they saw "Director BNC" as the identifier but failed to recognize that the National Security Coordinator is the true account owner. Because they never consulted the owner, they misinterpreted what they were looking at.
He put it bluntly: "You cannot secure a conviction on another man's ignorance."
Why This Matters
National security cases are serious. They deal with matters that can affect the safety of the entire country. Akyea's argument is that if investigators do not even understand basic structures within the national security apparatus, any case they build is worthless.
He called the entire exercise "bogus" and "sad" — strong words from a former lawmaker who understands how investigations and prosecutions should work.
The Bigger Picture
This raises uncomfortable questions about who is conducting sensitive national security investigations in Ghana. If Akyea's claims are true, it means people without expertise in the field are making decisions that could ruin lives and damage national institutions.
For ordinary Ghanaians, the message is clear: before you believe what you hear about a national security case, ask who did the investigating — and whether they actually understood what they were looking at.
