Akosua Manu, a communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and aide to flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, over his comments on Ghana’s SIM registration process.
Speaking on TV3’s *The Keypoints* on March 21, 2026, Manu faulted the Ningo Prampram MP for what she described as a failure to recognize the role played by former minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful. According to her, Owusu-Ekuful initiated the collection of biometric data that now supports efforts by telecom operators to update the national SIM database.
Manu argued that current reforms should not overlook earlier contributions, stressing that the previous registration exercise laid a necessary foundation for ongoing improvements. She maintained that progress in national projects is often built on systems established by predecessors.
In response, Sam George rejected the assertion, insisting that performance should be judged by outcomes rather than attempts. He cited Marietta Brew’s role in Ghana’s victory in the maritime boundary dispute with Ivory Coast as an example of measurable success, contrasting it with what he described as shortcomings in the earlier SIM registration exercise.
He added that his focus as minister is to ensure the upcoming re-registration delivers efficient and reliable results. He assured the public that the new process will rely heavily on technology to reduce congestion and eliminate the long queues experienced during the previous exercise.
The back-and-forth has fueled public discussion, drawing attention to differing views on accountability and the recognition of past efforts in Ghana’s ongoing digital and communications reforms.
