We published planned maintenance at facilities within our operational areas – ECG’s response to load management timetable request by PURC

In response to a recent request by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) regarding load management timetables, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has clarified its position. The ECG revealed that it has been publishing planned maintenance works across its operational areas to inform customers about potential interruptions in power supply.

The clarification came through a letter addressed to PURC, dated March 27, 2024, and exclusively obtained by 3news.com. This letter serves as a reply to an 8-page order statement issued by PURC to ECG on March 18, 2024.

Specifically addressing PURC's request for evidence of publication of load management timetables corresponding with the timelines and duration of each transformer injection to consumers, ECG's Managing Director, Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama, provided soft copies of publications on planned maintenance at various facilities within ECG's operational areas.

Mr. Mahama emphasized that while ECG doesn't issue notices for individual transformer injections, it does notify customers of planned maintenance activities. These activities include substation maintenance works, underground cable fault repairs, overhead line fault repairs, damaged pole replacements, and transformer injections.

Despite ECG's efforts to comply with regulatory requirements, on March 28, PURC expressed dissatisfaction and threatened regulatory action against ECG for perceived non-compliance.

The exchange between ECG and PURC underscores the ongoing challenges within Ghana's electricity sector. With frequent power outages and infrastructure maintenance becoming more prevalent, ensuring effective communication between service providers and regulatory bodies is crucial.

The issue also highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of public utilities. As consumers rely heavily on electricity for daily activities, clear communication about maintenance schedules and potential disruptions is essential for minimizing inconvenience and maximizing efficiency.

Moving forward, it is imperative for both ECG and PURC to work collaboratively to address concerns and improve the overall reliability and quality of electricity services in Ghana. This includes streamlining communication channels, enhancing monitoring mechanisms, and fostering greater cooperation between stakeholders.

In the face of growing demand and evolving challenges, fostering a culture of accountability and responsiveness will be key to ensuring sustainable and reliable electricity supply for all Ghanaians.
