In a recent address to enthusiastic supporters in Kwahu, Eastern Region, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), outlined a significant shift in the government's approach to combating illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. Dr. Bawumia asserted that under his regime, seized excavators would no longer be subjected to incineration, signaling a departure from previous practices.
The Vice President commended the NPP administration's efforts in tackling the scourge of illegal mining over the past seven years. Speaking at a health walk event, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the party's accomplishments in various sectors, asserting the superiority of the Akufo-Addo-led government over its predecessor.
Addressing the issue of galamsey, Dr. Bawumia pledged to introduce a new regime aimed at assisting small-scale miners. Central to this initiative is the establishment of a mineral development bank to provide financial support to small-scale mining operations. He assured miners that seized excavators would no longer meet the fate of destruction but would instead be utilized as part of the proposed strategy to address illegal mining activities.
"We are going to help small-scale miners; we will introduce a mineral development bank to get money for them. There is a new regime for small-scale miners; we will not burn your seized excavators," Dr. Bawumia affirmed, drawing applause from the crowd.
Moreover, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the NPP's achievements across various sectors, including job creation, agricultural growth, infrastructure development, and urban revitalization. He underscored the government's commitment to advancing the nation's economic agenda and improving the welfare of its citizens.
The announcement of a revised approach to tackling galamsey reflects the NPP's evolving strategy for addressing environmental and economic challenges. By shifting towards a more nuanced approach that prioritizes support for small-scale miners, the party aims to strike a balance between environmental conservation and socio-economic development.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Dr. Bawumia's statements signal a proactive stance by the NPP in addressing pressing issues facing the nation, positioning the party as a frontrunner in the upcoming elections.
