In a surprising turn of events, Guru NKZ, a prominent candidate for the Students' Representative Council (SRC) presidential position at the University of Ghana (UG), has been disqualified from the race. The disqualification follows an August 11 vetting by the UG-SRC Vetting Committee, which determined that Guru, a level 300 student, does not meet the residency requirements stipulated by the SRC constitution.
Andy Asante Okyere Mensah, a lead spokesperson for Guru’s campaign, has publicly accused the disqualification of being an act of sabotage. In an exclusive interview with Prince Benjamin on Accra 100.5 FM’s Entertainment Capital, Mensah asserted that Guru would have won the election by a significant margin. “Let’s do things right and be honest about it. Guru would have won the election by a landslide, hands down. This is what some people want to avoid. It’s definitely sabotage,” Mensah claimed.
Mensah clarified that the alleged sabotage was not orchestrated by the UG management but rather by elements within the student body and the SRC. He declined to specify individuals involved but stated that investigations are underway to identify those responsible. “We’re working on it and at the appropriate time, we’ll know those behind it,” he said.
Despite the setback, Mensah expressed optimism that UG management would review the matter impartially. “We believe that when the matter is taken to UG management, they will justly decide whether Guru can compete as a resident or non-resident,” he added.
This disqualification is particularly significant for Guru, as this election cycle represents his last opportunity to run for SRC president as a level 300 student. Meanwhile, competitors Maradona Adjei Yeboah and Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, campaigning under the joint ticket "Maralit," continue their bid for the SRC presidential and vice-presidential offices.
Entertainment Capital producer Eugene Baah reached out to Guru for a statement, but Guru declined to comment due to legal advice. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on UG management’s next steps in addressing the allegations and resolving the controversy surrounding the SRC elections.
